Everything is a number
Words become tokens, pixels become brightness values, sound becomes pressure samples. Before a model can think about the world, the world must be flattened into arithmetic.
[ Chapter 02 — The Mind ]
Every idea you've ever had was just electricity finding a path. So is every idea a machine will ever have. Below: a living network. Poke it.
[ Five laws of the machine ]
Words become tokens, pixels become brightness values, sound becomes pressure samples. Before a model can think about the world, the world must be flattened into arithmetic.
A connection carries a number that says how much to care. Multiply, sum, repeat a few trillion times — that's not a metaphor for understanding. In these systems, that is understanding.
An activation function decides whether a neuron fires. Without this small nonlinearity, a thousand layers would collapse into one boring equation. Curvature is where intelligence hides.
When the network guesses wrong, blame travels backwards through every layer, nudging every weight by a tiny gradient. Do this a few billion times and chaos becomes competence.
At sufficient scale, abilities appear that no engineer designed: translation, reasoning, code. We built the vessel. The capabilities emerged on their own — and we're still writing the safety manual.
